CSM Grad 2009

I helped Will with his final collection at CSM last year which made it to the press show and has been shown worldwide in a variety of magazines. Since then he has been travelling and pursuing his DJ interests but now he's back in London working on a new collection for London Fashion Week. I will be working hard with him again this month to help him produce his looks!

Paris Menswear 2010

My first time at Paris fashion week was a great experience. Notable shows embedded in my mind include Kenzo, Walter Van Beirendonck and Dries Van Noten. Each of which produced an atmosphere to go with their collection rather than just some men walking around a room. Disappointing for me was Damir Doma. But the organisation of the show meant that I was in a severely bad mood when I saw the collection.

Louis Vuitton and Miharayasushiro produced amazing music, both blending classical music (live violinist at Mihara) with funky electro, both overlayed on top of each other, out of sync but totally relevant to the show.

Fashion design wise, Walter Van Beirendonck really made a huge impression on me. The freedom and fun that he's had can be felt through the collection and it made the show a whole lot more enjoyable. That would be the type of label that would love to represent. For too long have the 'fashionable' taken themselves far too seriously.

I believe I was one of very few at all of the shows I visited to be wearing anything other than black. And I was severely disappointed by this. Yes I agree it shows a level of sophistication that cannot be achieved by the more vibrant and brighter colours but I'm 20 years old. I don't need to be sophisticated. Have I run out of fun already? I'm not ready to dress like I'm 40. It's sad that other just-post-teens do.

Yes, in the past it has been regular for the young to dress as their mature versions do but we're in the 20-10's! Isn't rebellion everything now? I felt that the sense of anarchy had been lost this year with only Walter bursting the bubble.

Of the shows I saw (LV, Yurkievich, Smalto, Dries, Julius, Vibskov, Blaak, Beirendonck, Saberi, Kenzo, Dunhill and Damir Doma), Dries really showed their creativity. Walkie talkie music, moving spotlights, corridor catwalk and a great venue all contributed to an unforgettable show. The collection however was interesting, aside from the visible shoulder pads and the bright blue striped apparel, the clothes were very wearable consisting of a very Dries beige and navy. Each outfit was quite minimalistic and occasionally casual.

At Kenzo's show, the models serenaded the beautiful roundabout after the show just outside their flagship store where the show took place, they hired retro cars and a vintage bus to collect the models. Inside at the show the organisation was fantastic and very professional. They even gave umbrellas to those show visitors. I thought this was an extremely considerate touch (to which I give full credit to the intern that ran to the local store). Definitely raised my opinion of their usually quite reserved collections. This season it continued to keep with the japanese fabric style with french elegance. Difficult to go wrong but some looks I really enjoyed.

2010

This year I hope for more organisation on my part. My flat in London Bridge is beginning to look like something someone lives in as opposed to just a room. And my trip to Paris for the menswear 2010 shows has been booked! Shall keep you posted as the pictures come in!

Central Saint Martins has been good to me but I haven't yet been worthy. This is the year for me and I shall keep you posted on my designs, ideas and brainstorms for projects I will be working on. I would love and appreciate any input.

I have financially planned to buy a new DSLR camera after mine was stolen last year.

What's looking stylish to my eyes at the moment is the Lumix GF1.

This camera not only delivers on a DSLR quality level, but is small enough to fit in my pocket and stylish enough to hang around my neck.

These Raf Simons gloves from 2007/AW are still in, in my opinion. They ooze an air of masculinity. I'm personally looking for a hybrid pair of these and falconry gloves. We've not seen something alike for a while, and would only add to a modern day outfit.

Alessandro Dell Acqua, Duckie Brown, Belstaff, Attachment. What I'd be wearing this Winter.

Dell Acqua's outfit provides a fresh take on the schoolboy smart. Carefully placed grey accents on the jacket make it beautifully modern. The soft silhouette, larger shirt lapels and slim tie combine to create a great look, but the beige knit finishes it and subtly keeps the outfit unique. Reminds me of Burberry from the previous Summer.

Duckie Brown on the other hand provides almost a futuristic push on a strong silhouette. The trouser have a ribbed detail providing a break from the normal flatness. The gloves are a key piece here, slightly pointed and high up the forearm. A great masculine accessory. The knit top carefully avoids any connections to terrorists and the styling keeps the look young.

Belstaff's sophisticated outfit would go great on the broader man. The palette is wonderfully modern on this more traditionally inspired design. The kneepads add a touch of mystery, but must be worn carefully, if not in proportion it may take over and it looks best slightly camouflaged under the great browns which give the impressive of wealth. A luxury leathery look.

Attachment bring the Japanese element into modern high fashion. Producing highly inventive shapes and cuts, they achieve a wonderful blend between the smart and casual. This great combination of layers makes the outfit look extremely warm. I love lower necklines, and to have managed to create this illusion whilst keeping warm is an achievement in itself. I'd love to own any of these pieces.

These WeSC Alp Horn headphones are fresh. The black headband keeps it a little bit more sophisticated and the non-rounded edges keep it looking clean. £90.

£70 Maraca's are for the more sporty look. Very casual but great for a colourful outfit.

Scott Schuman - The Sartorialist, Eric Musgrave - Sharp Suits, Hardy Amies - ABC of Mens Fashion. Three essentials for the modern day man. Hardy Amies provides an amazing step through the alphabet guide to sophistication. The Sartorialist is great for anyone who likes to be up to date. I wonder when another will be released!
